Charles N. Funk joined Iowa State Bank & Trust Company as President and CEO on November 1, 2000. Formerly, he held positions as President & Central Region Manager and Chief Investment Officer for Brenton Bank-Des Moines. Charlie has a background in investment management and served as a portfolio manager during his early years in banking. Those who've worked with Charlie often comment on the talent he possesses for consensus building, which makes him an excellent leader for a capable and experienced ISB&T staff.
Growing up in Lancaster, Missouri, a small town just south of Bloomfield, Iowa, Charlie was first instilled with the tradition of community banking by his father, who owned a small local bank there. A graduate of William Jewell College, Charlie has always had a desire to learn and teach the business of banking and investments. Currently he is on the faculty of the Colorado Graduate School of Banking in Boulder and the Iowa School of Banking. Previously, he taught for the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Georgetown University. He also serves on the Board of the Iowa Bankers Association.
Charlie and his wife, Connie, have three daughters--one attending Boston College, one at Georgetown, and one who is a recent graduate of Truman State University. As a family, the Funks have enjoyed being active in sports and in the community. Charlie is involved in many area organizations, including serving as a board member and Past Chair of Iowa City Area Development (ICAD); member and former Chair of Iowa City First United Methodist Church Board of Trustees; Campaign Chair and Board Member for United Way of Johnson County; and additionally, he is currently President of the Iowa City Schools Athletic Booster Club and Past Chair of the Little Hawks Club at City High School. Charlie served as the Chairman of the Easter Seals of Iowa from 2000-2002 and was Co-Chair of the 2002 - 2003 "Yes for Kids" campaign, a successful initiative to pass a $39.2 million school bond referendum for the Iowa City Community School District.
Those who meet Charlie for the first time are often surprised by his 6'6" height...but they're not surprised to learn that he played professional basketball! Located in Liege, Belgium, he served in the European League from 1977-1979. Charlie recently retired after twenty-three years of high school and college basketball officiating. He ran his first marathon in October 2006 and ran a Boston-qualifying time 3:35.
